Literacy Night

It was great to see everyone who made it to Literacy Night.  I enjoyed watching you interact with your children as they demonstrated how we do certain tasks in the classroom.  I am so lucky to get to work with each of your wonderful children.

Showing mom and dad how to play "What's Missing?"
Making decoding character sticks (Eagle Eye reminds us to look at the picture to figure out the unknown word)

Using magnetic letters to make words and changing the initial, medial, or final letter to make a new word.

If you were not able to make it I will be sending home the information and materials to make the things the students made that night.

Dental Health

We have been learning about how to care for our teeth this week.  Ms. Gilbert, our student teacher and the class conducted a great science experiment to see which drink is better for your teeth.

They put an egg in water and an egg in soda and left it for a couple of days.  They checked it each day and recorded the appearance.  After two days in soda the egg was very brown.  They brushed the egg with toothpaste and some of the stain came off.

We ended the week with a visit from my very good friend and dental hygienist Mrs. Katrina. She taught our very interested kiddos proper brushing technique and even about parts of our teeth.

And I couldn't resist sharing one of the sweet kiddos reading to the class at the end of the day.

January in Our Class and School

We celebrated the 100th day of Kindergarten in January by dressing like we were 100 years old!  We had a parade through the building with second grade who wore their 100th day collections in different creative ways.  What a fun day!  This is the OLD kindergarten team. Minus Ms. Amy Cook who decided she wanted to be the youngest on the team for the day. ;)

We made a prediction about which would be heavier 100 pieces of popped popcorn or 100 popcorn kernels. We then worked with our table teams to count to 100 and add to the scale to see if our predictions were correct.

Catching Up

There are so many classroom happenings to catch up on.... I think I will have to do it in several posts.  Here it goes

Before Thanksgiving we discussed the pilgrims and their voyage to the new land.  We learned about their crowded trip over aboard the Mayflower and we learned about what they were able to bring on the ship.  Students brought an item from home that they would bring aboard the ship and shared what it was and why the would want to take it with them to the new land.  We enjoyed being on the Mayflower so much we wanted to read on the ship during learning centers.

Reading on the Mayflower
After Thanksgiving  we had a special visitor, Spike our classroom Elf.  He showed up making putting away our backpacks and beginning a morning routine a little difficult.

We read several books about the Gingerbread Man and the Gingerbread Girl, and the Gingerbread Baby and had some fun while learning with our Gingerbread themed learning centers.

We went caroling at various locations in our community.

We had a watch dog dad read to our class about a scared squirrel.

Then we even had a school-wide assembly where we sang Christmas songs.

Then we partied like snowmen at our classroom party.   Special thanks to our AWESOME homeroom mothers.  You make my life so much easier. :)
I almost forgot!  Yes! We are in our PJs!  We also had a great morning taking part in fun Polar Express activities including watching the Polar Express. December isn't complete without the Polar Express.

A great picture of my great group of Kinders

And you can't have a serious picture without taking time for a fun and crazy picture!

What party is complete without some games!?

We pinned the nose on the snowman!

 Had a snowball toss

And we even made a snowman craft

And wedged into our December full and assessing we even had time for solving math word problems! If you had 4 cups and each cup had 10 ice cubes.  How many ice cubes would you have?

Be looking for what we've been doing since January coming soon!
